Technically, that generation of the Mercury Cougar was the replacement for the Ford Probe in Europe (and was called the Ford Cougar). The Ford Probe was based on the Mazda MX-6.

So, ignoring the fact that the Cougar was based on the Ford Contour/Mondeo and not a Mazda product ...it’s still a very large stretch.
